Growing in popularity across the country, flag football leagues bring all the speed and excitement of the traditional game without the contact.

Players who play flag football wear nylon belts with flags. The goal of the defense is to pull those flags and remove them from the belt. After a player comes in possession of the football, a defender can remove the player's flag. The ball is then placed at the spot of flag's removal.

To start playing, you’ll need a handful of items to play and excel. Sure, football cleats and a football seem like no-brainers, but did you know companies make flag football-specific shorts to help enhance the overall experience? You can also have receiver gloves, compression apparel and football socks, too. Plus, even though contact is minimal, you’ll still want necessary protective equipment. Don't forget items like integrated apparel, arm sleeves and a mouthguard.

Here’s a complete list of the flag football essentials to have when you take the field for the first time this season.
