There are several fundamental skills every basketball player needs to work on when they first step onto the court. One of the most important is learning how to properly dribble the basketball.

No matter if you’re a guard, forward or a center, you’re going to have to dribble the ball during a game. By properly dribbling the ball, you can increase your chances of success on the hardwood.

HOW TO DRIBBLE

To properly dribble:

  • Get in an athletic position with your hips low, back straight and eyes up.
  • Use your finger pads to dribble. Do not use your finger tips or palms.
  • Make sure to keep your elbow behind the basketball for speed and control.
  • Your off-hand should be out in front of your body to help protect the ball from a defender who might reach in. In this position, you’re ready to make a play.

Regularly practicing dribbling with both hands can help improve your ball-handling skills.
