This is my second time reviewing this product — the first written shortly after misplacing one of the rubber bumpers between the rack and stays while in a frustrated frame of mind; incidentally, the missing piece just resurfaced following a month of hiding between the coils of my apartment ’s radiator. — during the interim I had been using a DIY substitute part I crafted from an inner tube. Yes- the bumpers are prone to falling out when putting on and removing the rack and this is pretty annoying. But the fact is this rack is, overall, a fine product! Anyway, combined my two reviews average a rating of four stars and I would say that this is accurate. Would still be great if replacements for the bumper were available for online purchase but there are DIY workarounds such as using a comparably- shaped section of inner tube. I own a 2014 Subrau Legacy Limited and was in the market for a trunk mount bike rack which was manufactured in the USA. Not that easy since just about every product out there is made in China. Wait your thinking he owns a Subaru, its made in Lafayette, Indiana and to my surprise Saris is made in Madison, Wisconsin. Very impressed with the design, fit, and function of the GateMate PRO. It took a little fiddling with it to get it to sit on the tailgate correctly( I only had one set of pad blocks over the top at first) but once I readjusted it fit my RAM 1500 perfectly. The straps took a bit of finesse to work through the gap between the bottom of the gate and the truck bed, but that is more a function of how the truck was designed. I plan to keep a small piece of bent coat hanger wire in one of the pockets to help me pull the straps through the gap when I install it again. The Cannondale mountain bikes we hauled sat neatly in the cradle of the foam pads and the straps secured them incredibly well to the truck. For all of the goofballs that complained about the length of the strap in the other reviews- All you have to do is wrap the strap around the frame tube one extra revolution THEN thread it through the plastic ring and cinch it tight. Makes me wonder how some people manage to find their way out of bed in the morning, but I digress. This method of one extra wrap around the frame tube provides a really nice grip on the frame. We drove a couple of hundred miles so far with the bikes strapped down and they do n't wiggle or bounce at all. The mesh storage pockets are a nice touch, as is the cutout that provides access to the tailgate handle and backup camera. The material that sits against the vehicle paint is incredibly soft. Sure, there may be cheaper options out there but they certainly do n't appear to be as well- made as this one. VERY pleased with the purchase!

I ’ ve installed this GateMate Pro in my F150 Lightning. The gate is a couple of inches too wide to cleanly fit inside the frame of my Retrax tonneau, but because the GateMate is flexible I ’ m able to squeeze it in enough to close the tailgate. I might trim a bit off the sides to fix this. The product materials are strong and seem like they ’ ll last a few years. I like the pouches where I can store small items like gloves or bike tools.

We installed this on our Expedition a few months ago and left it on all summer. It is so convenient to tilt it down and get to the cargo area and it does n't block much of the rear view. We 've taken this on several road trips with 5 bikes attached and it performs really well. Having access to the rear hatch( even with 5 bikes mounted) is a game changer for road trips. It is easier to raise and lower( when loaded with bikes) than I anticipated. When not in use, we keep the arm folded down and it's really low profile. The only downside is that it activates the backup sensor when in reverse. It is challenging to get 5 bikes on at a time, but super easy to fit 1- 3 at a time. With five bikes, you really have to work to make them all fit. We have some smaller bikes for our kids that need the extra crossbar attachments when trying to fit 5 at a time. However, once you get them all loaded it is really easy to lock them with the included cable and they feel very secure. The rack is stiff and does n't move around even fully loaded. After a few longer trips with the bikes all loaded, I did have to tighten the bolt attachment to the hitch and the lower pivot bolts to stiffen it back up, but that seems like normal maintenance for a rack holding almost 150lbs of bikes.

Our house was flooded by Hurricane Ian. Most of the items that went underwater, especially metal, were destroyed by the salt water. These are probably the best universal type roof racks you will be able to find. I shopped extensively for racks that would be able to stand up to transporting a heavy kayak over thousands of miles. We used these on a 2016 Honda CRV( does not have a rain gutter or lip to catch other types of attachment systems) to transport the kayak from NY to Florida through a major southern blizzard with these racks on the car. The racks and kayak did not budge an inch. The ratchets seemed to work fine. I cinched them up as tightly as possible and then tied a half hitch as insurance. We kept the kayak on the rack with some budget ratchet tie downs from Harbor Freight. The fact that the tie downs for the rack do go through the interior of the car may put some people off but this also make the racks very secure. I also want to add that these did not mar the finish or cause any scratches or dents to the vehicle. I highly recommend these if you are having difficulty trying to find racks that work with your vehicle.

Happy with my purchase. Unit is not as long as I thought it was. Checked to make sure before purchasing as I have a very long wheelbase e- bike. Would have liked to see tire guides a little higher to prevent the front wheel twisting once it is strapped down. Problem solved by making sure the front wheel axle doesn ’ t protrude past the end of the guide rails. Once you realize there is an order to strapping your bike down the unit works well and holds the bike in a very stable position. I really like the locks on the upright top tube clamps as it makes it extremely difficult for someone to remove the bike from the rack and you don ’ t have to fiddle with pulling out cable locks. Like that the top tube clamps are telescopic; much superior to the Easy Fold rack, with fixed clamps that made carrying two bikes a massive headache. Also really like the lights and license plate position, although it does take a little while to realize your vehicle is a couple of feet longer than it was. No more tickets for having a covered license plate. Bikes are easy to load and rack carries two heavy e- bikes in a stable manner. Recommended.

This rack feels very solid yet is relatively lightweight. Contrast this to the `` hanging design '' of my previous Yakima rack, which was much heavier and cramped, accommodating only three adult bikes at best rather than its claimed four. The levering motion is very smooth to retract/ lower the rack, and getting bikes on and off is a breeze. The instructions could be a bit better, possibly, but maybe a bike rack is something you just have to mess with on your own until you figure it out. Also, one must be sure to keep even the unused frame straps strapped( tightly) to prevent the small grey insulating pieces from blowing off and sailing away while driving.

This was my third hitch bike rack. My take would be that you can go cheaper and damage your bikes and have the rack fail after 12 months. Or you can go more expensive and get something that looks cooler but adds absolutely no benefit for the core purpose of carrying 4 bikes. OK to be fair, I have n't done my final installation( waiting for xadapt12 kit) but can say I love the concept, just not the `` clamps '' that hold the portage padded feet. They do n't really fit an AeroBlade very well( flipped or not). I am going to use Xadapt12 which holds padded foot to AeroBlade by means of T bolt in AeroBlade track.( That's what center hole in padded foot is for.) Expect if to work excellently. Y'all are n't gon na believe this, but I biked with my dog and boyfriend all the way from San Luis Obispo, California to San Francisco, California. 300 miles of pulling my dog in the tail wagon, trailer pullin living. This thing held up like a champ, we went on dirt roads, hills, roads with potholes, got on a train and bus, and pulled a bunch of other stuff too. My dog is only 11 pounds so we had room for gear as well in the tail wagon. I highly recommend this product although it is a little pricey, it was wonderful how easily it folded up and could be stowed away or carried onto public transportation. Fits my GMC Sierra multi- pro tailgate and easy to install. Used a couple times so far and keeps bikes stable and protects my tailgate. Got the large size and fits perfect. Fits five bikes easily and could probably get two more in there. “ I like it a lot ”

Very impressed with the design, fit, and function of the GateMate PRO. It took a little fiddling with it to get it to sit on the tailgate correctly( I only had one set of pad blocks over the top at first) but once I readjusted it fit my RAM 1500 perfectly. The straps took a bit of finesse to work through the gap between the bottom of the gate and the truck bed, but that is more a function of how the truck was designed. I plan to keep a small piece of bent coat hanger wire in one of the pockets to help me pull the straps through the gap when I install it again. The Cannondale mountain bikes we hauled sat neatly in the cradle of the foam pads and the straps secured them incredibly well to the truck. For all of the goofballs that complained about the length of the strap in the other reviews- All you have to do is wrap the strap around the frame tube one extra revolution THEN thread it through the plastic ring and cinch it tight. Makes me wonder how some people manage to find their way out of bed in the morning, but I digress. This method of one extra wrap around the frame tube provides a really nice grip on the frame. We drove a couple of hundred miles so far with the bikes strapped down and they do n't wiggle or bounce at all. The mesh storage pockets are a nice touch, as is the cutout that provides access to the tailgate handle and backup camera. The material that sits against the vehicle paint is incredibly soft. Sure, there may be cheaper options out there but they certainly do n't appear to be as well- made as this one. VERY pleased with the purchase!

I ’ ve installed this GateMate Pro in my F150 Lightning. The gate is a couple of inches too wide to cleanly fit inside the frame of my Retrax tonneau, but because the GateMate is flexible I ’ m able to squeeze it in enough to close the tailgate. I might trim a bit off the sides to fix this. The product materials are strong and seem like they ’ ll last a few years. I like the pouches where I can store small items like gloves or bike tools.

Purchased 2 sets of the Hull- a- port for our Wrangler JK. Used the the Jeep brand cross bars and the Thule J hooks fit perfectly. Very easy to put on and take off the cross bars. Our kayaks fit perfectly on the Hulu- a- ports and are very secure. We paid extra for the best and we are not disappointed…would highly recommend and would buy them again.

I have 3 of these carriers. They are solid, sturdy add- ons to my roof rack. One of my kayaks is an unwieldy 72 lb tandem. The design of the rack helps us slide it up on top and into the carrier.

I Bought these racks for a 10 Hour trip to North Carolina. these things are absolutely rock steady. The steel Straps that attach to your cross bars do n't slip a millimeter during transit. also the strap guide on the top bar of these racks are great so you can set the strap and fold it up without having to climb up on the car to do so. Very pricey as far as kayak racks go but worth every penny in piece of mind.
